NEW DIRECTOR IS APPOINTED

Debbie Lawrence will be heading up Fitness Wales as its new Director from the end of January 2010.  Everyone here is delighted as Debbie brings a wealth of experience from her time in the industry - as an instructor, tutor, assessor, presenter and external verifier.  Many will know her as a prolific writer, with seven fitness titles including Circuits, Pilates, Exercise Referral and Aqua to her credit.  She is passionate about education and holds a BA, Cert Ed and MA (post compulsory education and training).

Debbie said “I am delighted to be appointed as the new leader for Fitness Wales and I am honoured to have the opportunity to work with such a marvellous and spirited team of people.

Mary has done a tremendous job building the reputation and profile of Fitness Wales and maintaining a sense of integrity, spirit and community within all their operations. These values are close to my heart and my hope for the future is to continue to maintain and build on these very strong and people and community focused foundations.

I am thrilled with excitement about the future. There are so many changes happening within the sector; my aim is for us to be able to respond to these changes effectively, efficiently and enthusiastically.

I am looking forward to joining the team and meeting all the members. This all feels rather like a dream come true”

Debbie

Fitness Wales - Inspiration in Fitness Award

Laverne Rich was our first, Paul Harrison our second, so who will be our third Inspiration in Fitness Award winner?  It’s down to you, the Fitness Wales members. If you know of someone who deserves to be nominated, or indeed if you want to nominate yourself, then get the details to Fitness Wales.  The governing body’s committee will then consider all nominees before announcing the winner at the annual Spring Convention, April 2010.  This is a highly prestigious award within the fitness industry, recognising those instructors who go the extra mile, and give 150% to their clients and truly are an ‘inspiration to fitness’, through their determination, encouragement, motivation and sheer hard work.

Paul Harrison said winning the 2009 title had meant a great deal.  “It meant recognition for all the hard work I have put in to the industry and that loyalty is appreciated.”  He wryly added “It has not made a lot of difference to my managers!  But all my customers were proud of me, and took an interest in my progress.  There were articles in the local paper, and even my M.P wrote to congratulate me.”

The winner will be announced on 24th April 2010 at the Spring Spectacular

The Complete Guide to Stretching, by Christopher M Norris.  Book Review by Karen Griffiths, Fitness Wales member

The first part of this book is concerned with the scientific principles behind stretching.  Although I found it to be very technical, the diagrams helped clarify the points being made.  The subjects covered included leverage, centre of gravity, stability, range of motion etc., but in far more detail than we would have done on an exercise to Music Course, for example.  Joint and Muscle structures, principles of training, warm ups, injury prevention and types of stretching are explained in depth before we reach the actual exercises.

Part two covers the exercises.  Here we have beginner, intermediate and advanced stretches, partner and dynamic stretches.  Most of the beginner and intermediate stretches I have come across before, however, some of the advanced stretches would be contraindicated in a general fitness class, such as doing the splits (standing, feet wide apart , flexing your trunk at the hip, bending forwards to hold onto your ankles to stretch the hamstrings and hip adductors.). These advanced stretching exercises would be useful to physiotherapists and personal trainers working with individuals who have progressed to this level, as would the partner stretches for personal trainers or sports coaches working on a one to one basis.

The guidelines on dynamic stretching emphasize the importance of the warm up, static stretching matched to the body-part and range motion to be used in dynamic stretching, slow and controlled, progressing the speed of movement gradually until it matches that to be used in sport.  Dynamic stretches are done while standing still, progressing to walking activities, e.g. arm swings, knee to elbow and lunge walking.

The sections regarding stretching the nerves and the fascia (fascia is our soft tissue skeleton forming a continuous covering that links our bones, joints and muscles together) were again very technical but also very interesting, more appropriate for a physiotherapist, exercise therapist or sports coach than say, a Fitness Instructor in a Leisure Centre.  The final section of the book has some excellent flexibility tests for determining range of motion, assessing muscle imbalances and charting progress of client.  The chapter on stretching and sports injuries explains why the injured area should not be stretched for 3 to 5 days, this is the time from injury occurring to the beginning of the formation of strong collagen which bridges the injured area, before this time the tissues are too weak.  Once the inflammation has subsided stretching and lengthening exercises must be performed to lengthen and broaden tissues.  Here we have advice on how to treat injuries such as a sprained ankle, shin splints, pulled hamstrings, groin strain etc.

The final chapter gives ideas for designing you own sports-specific stretching program, whether it is for running, throwing, football, tennis or golf.

I found the book to be very interesting and would recommend it to anyone who wants a thorough understanding on the principles of stretching, whether it is for flexibility, rehabilitation or sport-specific.

PILATES AT LEVEL 3

Louise Shephard, Pilates tutor Fitness Wales have taken a two stage approach to helping you achieve the new CYQ Level Three Certificate in Pilates.

Stage One is designed for Fitness Instructors who do not currently teach Pilates so they can master the basics and gain some experience. After a successful assessment, Fitness Wales are happy to offer temporary insurance so you can start classes and get some experience.

Stage two is for Pilates Instructors (who have already passed the stage one, the old OCR stage 2 or Fitness Wales Pilates qualification) and who now need to upgrade to the new Level 3 standards.  Stage two will not only deepen your knowledge, but will help you plan a range of progressive Pilates classes and higher teaching skills.

Theory module:  The level 3 theory is the same whether you teach in the Gym, ETM or Pilates, so you’ll have to brush up Jayne Thompsett, Pilates tutorthe old anatomy and physiology, learn about planes of moves, joints in more detail, new muscle groups, the nervous system and basic healthy eating principles.  Instructors who have already passed the Level 3 Advanced Theory Paper are exempt from the theory module as they will not be required to sit the theory paper again.

Our insurance company have assured us they will continue to cover Instructors with either the Fitness Wales or OCR Level II Certificate in Pilates for at least another year.  However Skills Active and REPs only recognise Pilates qualifications at Level 3.

“I learnt such a lot from teaching my case study client over the weeks and really found it brilliant to home in on the fine technical points that make all the difference” said Sian Jenkins.

“It’s great to go through the experience of a course that really makes you feel you are a better teacher”

CYQ Exercise Referral Update

Wales is the only European country to have a Government funded project in every local authority area. There has never been better time for  instructors to break into this field.

This 6 day course is aimed at Gym Instructors who want to be at the leading edge in terms of referral schemes by obtaining the only REPs recognised qualification.

APA - Accreditation of Prior Achievement

CYQ regulations state that you must hold the L3 Advanced Instructor Award to receive an Exercise Referral Certificate, however, it may be possible to accredit previous achievement (APA), ie. sports related degree or other qualification that has put you at level 3 on the REPs.  In order to put yourself forward for level 3 APA please download an application form here.

POSTAGE

Would members please note that when sending any work into the office you need to get it weighed first to ensure that you have the correct postage; please also include your full postal address on the back of the envelope.  A first class stamp on an A4 letter is not sufficient.

Fitness Wales is regularly having to pay post office surcharges on members mail with insufficient postage on.

From 1st October '07 we will no longer pay these surcharges.  As a result this may result in your correspondence being held-up at a sorting office or being returned to you and results being delayed.
